As part of regular health screening patients should have a complete skin exam once a year from the age of 20. The primary reason for this is to monitor for melanoma. The sooner a melanoma is caught the better the chance of a cure. Melanoma is the most common cause of cancer death in women between the age of 26 and 32; so starting early in the skin exams is essential.

If a skin cancer has been found then more frequent visits may be warranted.
