During the winter it is very common to get dry hands and fissures (cracks) on the fingertips. One of the most important steps to avoid this is to moisturize the skin every time you wash your hands and to limit the use of harsh soaps. There are many over the counter creams that can achieve this. Creams that contain a type of protein called ceramides help keep the skin barrier healthy, preventing further dryness.  If you prevent dryness, you will prevent fissures.  For fissures that are already present you can use liquid band-aids or superglue to help with discomfort and to seal them.  If these steps are not helping, see your dermatologist for further evaluation and treatment.

You will always see a doctor.
