Vitiligo is an auto-immune attack on the skin’s pigment cells, resulting in light or white patches on the skin as these cells stop producing pigment. This condition can be treated with various prescription creams, and occasionally light therapy to try to turn off the inflammation in the skin so the pigment cells can produce color again. One new and exciting treatment is the Excimer laser. It uses a specific wavelength of light to target only the affected areas, and can be used just about anywhere on the body. Treatments are often two times per week for several months initially to get pigment to return to the areas. It is safe, treatments are painless, and can be covered by insurance.
