Hair thinning (pattern hair loss or balding) is extremely common and occurs in about half of all men and women to some degree.  It typically runs in families and contrary to popular belief, is inherited from both of our parents (not just the mother). Pattern hair loss can start as early as the teenage years with a second peak occurring in the 40’s and 50’s.  A decrease in hair density can also be seen with aging.  It is important to get a thorough evaluation to rule out an underlying medical cause for hair loss and to get the correct diagnosis. Treatment ranges from a topical medicine called minoxidil to a pill medication called finasteride. Some people are candidates for hair transplantation and low-level laser light energy. Pattern hair loss is an area that is being actively researched and new treatments are likely in the future.
