They are strongly related to sun exposure and often occur on the face, hands and lower legs. The usual presentation is as a growing, tender, scaly, red area. There are many treatments available but on the face Mohs Surgery  is often used. There is a chance that these can spread from the skin to other parts of the body but this is still not common.
